Virtual reality is no longer just a distant dream. Attendees of Mobile World Congress, Google I/O and the Game Developer Conference were all witness to this. These attendees were able to get some of the first glimpses of virtual reality for the mass market.

Throughout this year’s Mobile World Congress, virtual reality could be found everywhere you turned. People were wearing large, bulky VR glasses and being immersed in a virtual world. The same has been said for Google I/O and the Game Developer Conference. [Source]
At the Google I/O they handed out cardboard packages to attendees, and for a while, no one knew what to do with them. Later they figured out the cardboard was a place to put your phone. These packages then turned into the gear you needed for Google’s virtual reality. Attendees were soon immersed in the virtual world, and were seeing the streets in Google’s street view along with YouTube videos. Who would have guessed a piece of cardboard would be one of the coolest things at a Google event?
Though virtual reality has been seen at events like these, there is still a lot for VR companies to improve upon. They must condense these headsets for public use, otherwise the cumbersome size will continue to put off some consumers. Right now they are still too bulky and virtual reality companies like Oculus and HTC are all working to make virtual reality something for the everyday person.
Virtual reality gear is not something many people are going to go out and buy; however, if you help them take the first step, they may be more inclined to do so. This first step includes many VR companies planning on working with smartphones. Today, nearly everyone you come across has a smartphone, so this is a great idea by VR companies to implement. If customers would only need to buy a small headpiece that can be used with their phones, there is a larger likelihood that the everyday person will go out and purchase one.
Currently, virtual reality is still in the prototype stage but as soon as they are pass this stage and condense the eyewear, we are confident that virtual reality will be on the mass market in no time.

As of right now, we know that virtual reality is big in the gamer world, but difficult for the average person to consider purchasing. With that said, the future of virtual reality is bright. Yes, it can be used in video games to help gamers fully immerse themselves, but there may also be a future for VR in business. No more will there be a need to travel to and from meetings. With virtual reality, team members or employees can all sit in the same office without being in the same office. Facebook also believes there is a place for it in social media. We just have to wait and see what the future of virtual reality holds because it is here to stay and this is why:

Just by enjoying a simple jam session, SPARK produces enough clean energy to power a light or charge a mobile phone for communities without electricity. Due to a rechargeable battery inside the SPARK prototype, just 12 minutes of shaking the SPARK will provide an hour of electricity for these uses. The battery also stores power, making it unnecessary to shake for 12 minutes straight. Users could play SPARK for a few minutes in the morning, then again for a few minutes in the afternoon, and the available power will accumulate to store up to 20 hours of electricity.

The new technology and aspirations behind SPARK have made it a successful Kickstarter campaign, having raised its goal of 50,000 British pounds within a month’s time. The funds received from the Kickstarter campaign will help create a finished product from the prototype, to manufacture and distribute the product, and to develop and test educational assembly kits. After these stages are complete, the SPARK technology will be first distributed to schools in rural Kenya, which make up about 75% of Kenyan schools. The goal time to complete the research, development, manufacturing, and distribution of SPARK is nine months, with March 2015 as the marker for distribution.
The idea behind SPARK came from Sudha Kheterpal, a percussionist who has played with groups and artists such as Faithless, The Spice Girls, and Dido. Inspired by the thought of harnessing the energy produced on stage, Kheterpal and her team created SPARK as a maraca-like instrument that will store power as its shaken. That power can then be used in communities without electricity. While Kheterpal’s distribution will begin in rural Kenya, her vision is inclusive of any community without electricity to benefit from SPARK’s simple technology.

The alternative energy SPARK offers has the potential to significantly impact communities that either don’t have access to electricity or can’t afford it. In countries like Kenya, darkness can hinder time to study or do chores; with SPARK, children could not only have fun playing the instrument in school, at home, or while walking to and from, they could also feel safer on their walk with a light and be able to study or do homework after daylight hours. SPARK could also help parents do chores in times of little to no daylight in early morning or late evening. The prototype was tested in Kenya and found to significantly impact communities for these purposes.
SPARK works as it’s played with a magnet that moves forwards and backwards through the center of a coil of copper wire. This movement produces a current in the loops of wire and charges up the rechargeable battery each time the magnet slides through. The energy can be stored in the battery until it’s used. IFTTT (“if this then that”) is a free app that puts other apps to work. Like a master chef, IFTTT will build recipes to run certain actions; the ingredients for these recipes are other apps, like Evernote, Dropbox, or Gmail. For example, if you would like to receive an alert when it’s raining outside, you can make a recipe that connects the weather app to the alert. With IFTTT’s potential to integrate apps on the ultimate level, it could become one of the best productivity apps as it continues to develop and fine-tune its functions. [image]
The basic recipe for IFTTT establishes an “if this, then that” scenario. For example, if the weather forecasts rain, send me a text message. The first part of the recipe (the “this”) is a trigger. As an IT provider one of the most basic overriding goals for all of our clients is to NEVER LOSE DATA. This simple and basic goal is the reason we design servers with fault tolerance (minimal single points of failure), utilize IT security measures (firewalls, antivirus) and put backup system in place that maintain extra copies of the data – ideally in an automated fashion and/or with processes that are not prone to break down.
A business can recover lost data and resume operation when a basic “event” occurs like accidental deletion or even just losing a file. With technology today, restoring data is much faster than in the past where tapes were involved. There are also advances with server technology that allow for the snapshotting of data (Volume Shadow Copy) for very fast retrieval of accidentally lost or deleted files. These advances have made restoring data quick and reliable. This fact has also probably lulled a lot of businesses into thinking that they are all set as far as any potential data loss or operational disruption.
The most common type of event is a server crash. This can happen several different ways: a non-redundant part of the server could go down (like motherboard), the operating system of the server could become corrupted and not boot, or the server could lose more than 1 hard drive in a redundant set. Disaster recovery comes into play when something like this happens (or any other serious other kind of event like fire, natural disaster, etc.).
Disaster recovery planning shouldn’t be done during a disaster. This seems extremely logical, but unfortunately, this is when a lot of disaster recovery planning happens – and it is the wrong time. In this article it is estimated that 57% of small and medium sized business don’t have a disaster recovery plan.
Based on my experience, I would argue that that the number is actually much higher.
At the most basic level, disaster recovery planning is the process of identifying risks, putting together ways to avoid or mitigate risks, documenting plans, procedure and very specific courses of action that can be followed, testing and validating that plan and continually updating it. Disaster recovery planning should be done before a disaster and should be updated and tested on an ongoing basis.
Writing up this information has been on my mind for quite a while. Recovery will always be faster, more efficient and cost less if it is planned out ahead of time vs. on the fly during the disaster—that is the primary reason I wanted to bring awareness to this issue. Disaster recovery planning is a big undertaking. It takes significant time both on an IT side and on a business/operational side working hand in hand to make sure all risks are found and accounted for and a sound plan developed. There is also a probability factor involved. There is a probability that a business will never experience a disaster. Some businesses look at this and decide that they are not going to plan and just deal with a disaster if it happens. This is solely dependent on the business and their risk tolerance.
Again, I wanted to bring awareness to this issue and let you know as a company Momentum Technology Group is developing planning tools, planning templates and testing disaster recovery technologies that can make recovery faster and more cost-effective.
Disaster recovery (DR) involves a set of policies and procedures to enable the recovery or continuation of vital technology infrastructure and systems following a natural or human-induced disaster. Disaster recovery focuses on the IT or technology systems supporting critical business function, as opposed to business continuity, which involves keeping all essential aspects of a business functioning despite significant disruptive events. Disaster recovery is therefore a subset of business continuity. [Source]
Business Continuity – A business continuity plan is a plan to continue operations if adverse conditions occur, such as a storm, a fire or a crime. The plan includes moving operations, (recovering operations) to another location if a disaster occurs at a worksite or datacenter. For example if a fire destroys an office building or datacenter, then the people and business or datacenter operations would relocate to a recovery site.
The plan could include recovering from different levels of disaster which can be short time, localized disasters, to days long building wide problems, to a permanent loss of a building. [Source]
Recovery Point Objective, or “RPO”, is defined by business continuity planning. It is the maximum tolerable period in which data might be lost from an IT service due to a major incident. The RPO gives systems designers a limit to work to. For instance, if the RPO is set to four hours, then in practice, off-site mirrored backups must be continuously maintained – a daily off-site backup on tape will not suffice. Care must be taken to avoid two common mistakes around the use and definition of RPO. Firstly, BC staff use business impact analysis to determine RPO for each service – RPO is not determined by the existent backup regime. Secondly, when any level of preparation of off-site data is required, rather than at the time the backups are offsited, the period during which data is lost very often starts near the time of the beginning of the work to prepare backups which are eventually offsited. Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the targeted duration of time and a service level within which a business process must be restored after a disaster (or disruption) in order to avoid unacceptable consequences associated with a break in business continuity. It can include the time for trying to fix the problem without a recovery, the recovery itself, testing, and the communication to the users. Decision time for users representative is not included.
