Instagram Ads: They’re coming

  • SumoMe

That’s right. The days of scrolling, ad-free through your instagram feed will soon be coming to an end. Within the year in fact. The Wall Street Journal spoke with Instagram’s director of business operations, Emily White, who revealed that the photo and video-sharing service is laying the groundwork to begin selling ads within the year. “We want to make money in the long term, but we don’t have any short-term pressure,” she said. reports, “until this point, Facebook and Instagram have largely been focused on growing that user base, but sooner or later the focus shifts to monetizing it.” However, it is starting to seem like sooner than later.

The real challenge for instagram is figuring out how to integrate marketing without jeopardizing Instagram’s cool factor. After years without ads, Instagram’s biggest risk is alienating its members—especially its large base of teen and young adults, who are longed for by marketers. Too much in your face marketing could clutter the service and undermine one of its strongest selling points. In fact, instagram users have pushed back before. According to the Wall Street Journal, “instagram provoked a brief uprising last December when some members complained after a change in the app’s terms of service implied that user content could be turned into ads.” However, “Ms. White said there are third-party services that brands can use today to get permission for access to user content but that Instagram is not going to facilitate that.” Nonetheless, instagram has got some obstacles in front of them if they want to push ads without stepping on the toes of its users.

What are your thoughts on the soon-to-come instagram ads? Will these deter you from using the service? Do you think instagram ads could be successful? Please let us know in the comments.
