What is Social Media Day?

Launched by Mashable in 2010, Social Media Day is an annual global event on June 30 that recognizes the digital revolution happening right before our eyes. Social Media Day is a day to celebrate the technological advancements that enable everyone to connect with real-time information, communicate from miles apart and have their voices be heard; a celebration of the ways in which social media has changed our lives for the better. The event began with a few hundred Meetups and is now celebrated by thousands worldwide.

Some of the most popular events occurred in places such as Morocco, Brazil, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and the United States. Whether it was through intimate gatherings over pizza or elaborate parties, people turned up in droves to meet up with fellow social media aficionados over the weekend.
