Recently I was talking to a friend, Micah Logan, about her new blog and social networking efforts. She is a Realtor who just joined Activerain, she got her profile up on Facebook, she started her blog on blogger, and she said she was really getting into the social networks like Meetup.
Micah asked me what I thought of Meetup, and I had to admit that I know what it is but have never used it. And then out of the blue this little website started popping up everywhere. I see things about Meetup.com everywhere I turn now. Isn’t it crazy how that happens?
So what is this social network known as Meetup?
According to their site:
Meetup is the world’s largest network of local groups. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face.
Meetup’s mission is to revitalize local community and help people around the world self-organize. Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.
Their stats are impressive….looks like lot’s of people are meeting up:
You can find a group by time, topic, category, and/or location. If you cannot find what you are looking for you can start your own group.
I think this is a useful site, it’s like evite on steroids, and you don’t have to know anyone to get invited. If you are new to an area, switching careers, looking for a new hobby or group of friends, or a different way to network Meetup.com is a wonderful resource. I found groups for just about everything, sports, work, leisure, philanthropic, couples, education, and of course drinking-there were a lot of happy hour groups.
So thank you Micah, I have now have a new site to become obsessed with.
If you are in a Meetup group I would love to hear how it is working for you??
