Is your Facebook feed loud, crowded, and a little overwhelming?

Or did you ever wish that there was an easy way to share to some people you know but not to everyone? Maybe you have pictures of your kids that you only want to share with the grandparents, aunts and uncles.

Before you go on a wild un-friending spree, consider using Facebook Lists! If you haven’t taken advantage of this great feature in Facebook you should definitely try it.

Why You Should Use Facebook Lists

Facebook Lists allow you to view customized feeds filled only with content from people that you have selected to be in that list. Facebook lists also give you more control over who you are sharing your content with. When you post on Facebook you can choose for that content to only show up in the feeds of people within a certain list.

Here’s How to Set up Facebook Lists

Default Lists

There are three default lists that Facebook gives you: Close Friends, Acquaintances, and Restricted.

Close Friends: You can add your best friends to this list to see more of them in your News Feed and get notified each time they post. You also have the option to turn these extra notifications off.

Acquaintances: This list is for friends you don’t need to stay in close touch with. People on your acquaintances list will rarely show up in your News Feed. You can also choose to exclude these people when you post something, by choosing Friends except Acquaintances in the audience selector.

Restricted: This list is for people you’ve added as a friend but just don’t want to share with, like your boss. When you add someone to your Restricted list, they will only be able to see your Public content or posts of yours that you tag them in.

It is easy to add people to these lists. Simply:

1) Look in the left panel of your home page for the friends section and click on the name of the list you want to edit.

2) Add friends you want in the the list in the upper right corner of the page in the “Add friends to this list” box.

3) If you want to remove someone from a list, just click “Manage List” in the upper right hand corner and x-out the people you want to remove.

Custom Lists

You might notice that you already have more than just the Close Friends, Acquaintances and Restricted lists. This is because Facebook automatically creates other lists it thinks will be helpful to you based on places you’ve listed as living and where you went to school.

If you want to add a list that doesn’t already exist, simply look in the left column of your home feed for the “Friends” section and click “More.” At the top of the page you’ll see the button to create a new list. Name your list, add the list members, and you are done!

Once your lists are set up the way that you like you can click on each one to view a customized feed filled with content only from those within that list!

To share with members of a list and not the rest of your Facebook friends, click on that list and use the Update Status box on that page. You will see that the name of the list you are posting to appears beside the “Post” button. Alternately, you can also post to a list of your choice directly from your profile page. Beside the “Post” button you will see a drop down option to select the list that you like.
